Bacon Cook The Bananas: July 31

The Macon Bacon managed to cook up double-digit runs without homering for the first time all season and earned a 10-6 win over the streaking Savannah Bananas on Friday night at Luther Williams Field.

Prior to Friday, the Bananas (16-9) had won five straight games and three straight contests against the Bacon (12-8).

Savannah jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead thanks to back-to-back home runs off Fraser Ellard (Lander) in the 2nd inning. After a Cole Gambill (BYU) sacrifice fly in the home half of the inning and another Banana run in the third frame, Savannah led 3-1.

Luther Woullard (New Orleans) would tie the game up in the 3rd with a two-RBI triple to the right field wall before the Bananas again responded with a run to retake the lead in the 4th.

The Bacon manufactured three more runs in the fourth frame off RBIs from Freddy Achecar (BYU), R.J. Yeager (Mercer), and Cash Young (Georgia College) and added insurance in the 5th and 7th with a run in each of those innings to lead 8-4.

Savannah got another back-to-back solo home run sequence in the 8th to make things interesting at 8-6, but Jake Gitter (Northern Colorado) and Josh Hood (UPenn) took some pressure off the home side with RBIs in the home half of the 8th to bring the score to where it would stand.

Jack Sinclair (UCF) pitched a scoreless ninth inning for the Bacon to seal the deal.

The game marked just the fourth home contest all summer where the Bacon did not hit any home runs, and was the first time they had emerged victorious without a longball at Luther Williams Field in 2020. Macon leads the Coastal Plain League in homers with 38.

Dalton Smith (Georgia Tech) earned the win for the Bacon in relief, throwing four innings and giving up just two earned runs while striking out six opposing batters.

Macon will split up on Saturday night, with half the team traveling to Savannah for another matchup in the Golden Spork Series and the other half remaining at home to face Catawba Valley in an exhibition game at Luther Williams Field. Both games start at 7:00pm.
