Brody Westbrooks (Georgia Tech) and Fraser Ellard (Lander) combined for twelve strikeouts through eight innings to lead the Macon Bacon to a crucial 4-1 win over the Savannah Bananas on Saturday night at Luther Williams Field.
With the win, the Bacon virtually lock up the 1st Half championship in the Southern Summer Ball Series. With one league game left before the July 23rd cutoff, Macon is 9-5. Savannah has four games left but is 5-7 in league play.
The scoring got started in the 3rd inning when the Bananas’ Logan Foster drove in Gabe Howell with a base-hit.
The Bacon responded in the 4th inning by loading the bases and scoring Austin Deming (BYU) on a Jake Gitter (Northern Colorado) groundout. The game remained tied 1-1 until Cash Young (Georgia College) blasted his fourth home run of the season over the left-center fence for a two-run shot in the bottom of the 6th inning to make it 3-1.
Finally, Macon added an insurance run when Young came home to score in the 8th inning on a Banana fielding error.
Jack Sinclair (UCF) earned his second save of the season by pitching a scoreless 9th frame. Ellard was credited with the win after going three and two-thirds innings with one hit allowed, no runs, two walks, and six punchouts.
Macon has now won their last four games and eight of their last ten. With the victory, they improve to 9-3 at home and have won four of their last five matchups against Savannah.
The Bacon have an offday on Sunday and will return to the home diamond on Monday to play the Bananas at 7:00pm.
