In a Sunday resumption a rain postponed game from June 8th down in Savannah, the Bananas scored three unanswered runs to take game 10 of the Battle for the Golden Spork, 3-1.
The game resumed in the bottom of the second, with Macon holding a 1-0 lead. Rafi Vazquez quickly took it upon himself to turn the tide for his club.
Vazquez, the first batter of Sunday’s portion, pummelled one of the first pitches he saw to the opposite field. The ball ended up over the left field fence for a tying solo home run off of Cory Bartholomew, who took the loss.
Charlotte’s first baseman was not done. In the sixth, with a two run lead, Vazquez struck again, jumping on a Jay Causey fastball. Vazquez’s second homer of the night and third of the year also travelled over 400 feet, this time over the high wall in center.
Dustin Saenz got the win in his first appearance for Savannah. The Texas A&M lefty went the distance on Sunday, pitching innings three through seven, allowing two baserunners.
The rain was a factor all game long. Savannah scored the go-ahead run in the fourth, when a brief downpour slicked the ball. Bartholomew lost the strike zone with the slick ball, walking three in the inning.
Heading into the seventh inning stretch, the rain came back with a vengeance. The Bacon came out to play defense, but as quick as Jay Causey was warm, the field was a swamp. The game was called due to poor field conditions, handing the Bananas a rain-shortened win.
The Bacon are on the road again Monday night in Gastonia. They return home to play the Grizzlies on Tuesday at Luther Williams Field.
