It’s been a tough week for the Macon Bacon pitching staff, allowing 28 runs over three games, but the tide turned in the eleventh game of the Battle for the Golden Spork.
Macon got the offense cooking early. Daniel Harris singled to lead off the game, then stole two bases to reach third base with one out. With two outs, Nathan Schreckengost hit a slow roller to second base that should have ended the inning, but Justin McConnell couldn’t make the pickup. Schreckengost reached base and Harris scored the game’s first run.
Macon got three more off starter Stephen Chamblee in the second inning. Four hits drove in three to make the score 4-0. Harris drove in two with a double and finished the night 3-for-3.
The Bacon led the whole way behind brilliant pitching. Tyler Thompson received his first start of the year and pitched well, throwing five scoreless innings. Three relievers combined to throw four no-hit inning and finish the shut-out, Macon’s second of the year.
The win brought the Bacon within a half game of the Bananas in the CPL South Division. Macon is now 19-11, the Bananas 19-10.
The Bacon are off until Wednesday for the Coastal Plain League All-Star Showdown in Savannah on Sunday and Monday.
