In summer collegiate baseball, you hardly ever see the same roster from year to year. With high turnover and many opportunities for the players, it’s hard to get talented players back for a second year. But, the Bacon have done just that. They will be returning the University of Georgia’s Riley King and James Williams for a second season.
“We are excited to welcome back Riley and James for our second season. Both of these young men made a huge impact on the field and in the community last summer. The experience they will bring to the team will be second to none.” said Head Coach Danny Higginbotham, “Overall, this will be their third season in the CPL and their experience in the league will be instrumental to our success this summer. As an organization, we couldn’t be happier to have them back in Macon!”
King, a redshirt sophomore, led the Bacon in batting average (.306), hits (49), doubles (13) and slugging percentage (.406). King, the Suwanee, Georgia native had a tremendous season in the Bacon’s inaugural year. The third baseman was selected to his first Coastal Plain League All-Star Game last season based on those impressive numbers. King is expected to make an impact for the Bulldogs this coming season.
Williams, a redshirt sophomore led the Bacon with 46 strikeouts on the season. He posted a 2-2 record in seven appearances, holding a 2.49 ERA in 47 innings pitched. Along with King, with such impressive numbers, the Kennesaw, Georgia native saw himself voted to his first Coastal Plain League All-Star Game last season. Like King, Williams is also looking to get more starts and add to the Bulldogs great pitching staff.
Off the field, King and Williams also have found themselves on the University of Georgia’s Honor Roll their first two years in college.
“Not only are these two young men great baseball players, they are great people.” said Team President Brandon Raphael, “ We want these young men to represent the mission and values of the Macon Bacon on the field and in the community, and these two fit that mold perfectly.”
Opening Night for the Bacon will be Friday, May 31st at 7PM.
