Last week, we saw the return of two Coastal Plain League All-Stars with Georgia’s Riley King and James Williams. This week, we will see the return of two local players: Cal Gentry and Preston Sparks. And, the Bacon couldn’t be happier.
“Both Preston and Cal represent Middle Georgia, their respective schools, and the Macon Bacon at a peak level. I feel blessed that we have the opportunity to work together again this summer and that we are attracting local, top tier talent and character in these two.” said Manager Danny Higginbotham
Gentry, a junior at Georgia College had a tremendous year with the Bacon. He had a batting average of .273, 14 RBIs, 45 hits, and an on base percentage of .301. Gentry was the first player in Bacon history to record a hit and score a run. This spring, he is looking to make an impact at Georgia College as well, being named to the Peach Belt Preseason All-Conference Team last week.
“At the end of last season we talked with Cal about returning for another season and were ecstatic when he committed. His versatility on the field is a huge asset. He can play multiple positions at a high level and hasn’t even scratched the surface of the type of offensive threat he can bring to us this summer. On top of his quality play on the field, he will also bring another veteran presence in the locker room that will help create the positive, hard-nosed culture we need to be successful. I look forward to seeing the contribution he will bring to Georgia College this spring and pumped to have him back on the Bacon!” said Higginbotham
Sparks, a senior at Middle Georgia State University saw a tremendous year as well with the Bacon. In six games started (11 total appearances) he recorded a 3-3 record with 41 strikeouts and ERA of 3.89. Sparks is looking to be at the top of the rotation for the Knights this season and help them win back to back Southern States Athletic Conference tournaments.
“I couldn’t be more excited to have Preston back on board this summer as a senior. He developed himself into an integral part of our success last summer. Not only will he help us on the mound but he will also be a tremendous resource for our younger pitchers. He brings a wealth of knowledge and a positive attitude which makes him the type of veteran we feel blessed to have in our organization. I am excited to see what he will accomplish at Middle Georgia State this spring and can’t wait to have him back this summer!” said Higginbotham
In the classroom Gentry is a Marketing Major at Georgia College and Sparks is a Health Services Administration Major at Middle Georgia State University.
“It is great to have some local flare on the team.” said Team President Brandon Raphael. “It gives our fans a chance to cheer for some hometown heroes and gives these players a chance to play for Middle Georgia.”
Opening Night for the Bacon will be Friday, May 31st at 7PM.
