MJ Rookard is sizzling hot.
The Bacon center fielder was 10 for his last 15 entering Monday night at Lexington County. He kept on rolling, providing all of the offense needed for Macon’s 15-5 win over the Blowfish.
Rookard started his night with a leadoff single in the first, scoring two batters later with Jared Miller on a Calvin Estrada single, one of Estrada’s three hits on the night. Estrada drove in five on the night.
The Bacon were making hard contact off of Blowfish starter Brett Fulk through the first, and that continued in the second. Rookard unloaded on a 77 mph curve with a runner on, driving the ball into the trees beyond the right field fence to make the score 4-0.
In Rookard’s third at-bat, he hit another ball to the outfield off of Fulk, this time an RBI double into right field.
Entering his fourth plate appearance in the sixth, he needed the toughest piece to complete a cycle, a triple. But Rookard made his triple look easy, flying around to third on a hit into the right field corner. He would score two batters later via a Calvin Estrada single to make the game 9-1.
The cycle was the first in the young history of the Bacon, and he added on the seventh with a walk, giving him a “supercycle”, reaching on a walk, single, double, triple, and home run.
Rookard walked in the ninth and scored for the sixth time, a franchise record for the Bacon.
Ryan Kouba pitched effectively over the first five frames to earn the win, allowing two runs on two hits and two walks, while striking out three.
The loss went to Brett Fulk, who allowed eight runs in three innings pitched without recording a strikeout.
Tuesday, the Blowfish and Bacon will rematch in Macon in game two of the home & home series. Coverage starts at 6:45 on cplbaseball.tv.
